Aripeka: A Symbol of History and Inspiration

Once situated in Hernando County, Aripeka found its new identity in Pasco County in 1921 after being relocated across Hammock Creek. With a name derived from a prominent 19th-century Seminole leader, Aripeka’s fame extended beyond its boundaries, attracting renowned personalities like “Babe” Ruth, warrior Osceola, and the revered medicine man Aripeka, also known as Sam Jones.

Port Richey, established in December 1883, is named after Aaron McLaughlin Richey. Richey and his family settled near the Pithlachascotee River’s mouth—a post office named after the town was inaugurated in his residence in 1884.

A piece from The Tampa Daily Times dated January 20, 1912, highlighted the allure of the Port Richey colony lands. The fertile lands, ideal for crops ranging from tobacco and rice to oranges and tomatoes, captivated early settlers, who traveled via ox carts and horseback.

Today, despite the passage of over a century, Pasco County retains much of its natural allure. Settlers now arrive by modern transportation means, yet the essence of its vast landscapes remains intact. Modern commuting facilities have also reduced travel time, making Tampa a 40-minute drive away via the Veteran’s Expressway.
